George Dundas of Dundas, near South Queensferry, married his second wife Katherine Oliphant in the 1560's. In 1570 she bore a son, James.
There was already an heir to the Dundas estates, from George's first marriage and Katherine prevailed upon her husband to purchase Arniston as an inheritance for James, who later became the first Dundas of Arniston.
